These 16-page resource booklets contain a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of all 15 of the Edexcel ‘Time and Place’ poems from the newest anthology. Teachers have found the activities particularly useful throughout teaching, or for exam revision or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate. Each booklet is provided in both Word (to allow for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure for consistency of formatting between computers). These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s readng fluency and comprehension skills, whilst simultaneously building their understanding of castles. The three sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for the whole class reading sessions on: -Alfred the Great Non-Fiction Reading; -Deadly Dangerous Kings and Queens - Karl Shaw; -Queen Elizabeth II Factfile Reading. Each whole class reading session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each text is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children across lower KS2, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The resources are also suitable for home/ remote learning.

For example, there are references to scenarios and dilemmas that they themselves might find themselves in, in order to help them to make the right choices in their own lives. There are also fun role-play activities, beautiful, thought-provoking videos exemplifying each theme, and various discussion activities regarding how to show the skills in different areas of their own lives. No further resources are required, everything that you need to present the assemblies is included. Each set of slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes for each assembly to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!
